The brains outside your brain

Where does your brain begin and end? Well it might stretch further than you think.  Your brain is part of what is called your Central Nervous System, or CNS. The other big portion of the CNS is your spinal cord, where bundles of long neuron cells called nerves run down the spine in the centre of your back.

The nerves act as cables to relay messages between the brain and other parts of the body. So the spinal cord is like a two-way motorway of electrical information – the brain uses this system to ‘tell’ many of the body’s muscles what they should be doing, and meanwhile the body’s sensory system sends information into the brain about your environment.

Many people also consider that your eyes are an extension of your brain – not only are they physically close to the action, they are also directly connected through the optic nerve. When light falls on the retina at the back of the eyeball, messages travel via the optic nerve and reach the visual cortex at the back of your head where the information gets processed and you can ‘see’ what you are looking at. Illustration: Brain basics
